Getting started
How do I connect my Google Analytics?
Click the Synopsy icon in the menu bar, then click Connect Google Analytics. Google opens in your browser. Choose your account and allow read-only Analytics access, and your GA4 properties appear in Synopsy. There's nothing to set up in Google Cloud.
Where are Settings?
Open Synopsy from the menu bar and click the settings button at the top of the popover. Settings has General options (connection, menu bar total, launch at login) and a Websites list for ordering, hiding, renaming, and coloring your sites.
Can I try it before connecting?
Yes. On the welcome screen, choose Take a look with sample data. Sample sites are kept separate from your real settings. Click Exit preview when you're ready to connect.
Can I use more than one Google account?
Synopsy connects one Google account at a time, and shows every GA4 property that account can read, across all of its Analytics accounts. To switch, disconnect and connect with the other account.
Troubleshooting
Google says "Access blocked" or that the app is blocked
This usually means your Google Workspace administrator restricts which third-party apps can use company accounts. Ask your administrator to allow Synopsy. In the Google Admin console, that's under Security → Access and data control → API controls → App access control. Personal Gmail accounts aren't affected.
No properties appear
- Make sure you signed in with the Google account that has access to your Analytics. Disconnect in Settings and connect again to choose a different account.
- Synopsy shows Google Analytics 4 properties only. Universal Analytics properties won't appear.
- Your account needs at least Viewer access to a property. Check this in Google Analytics under Admin → Property access management.
- Check that you haven't hidden the property in Settings → Websites.
"Google's reporting quota is busy" or a quota cooldown
Google limits how many reports each property can run per hour. When Synopsy hits that limit, it waits and tries again automatically, and your cards keep showing the last numbers in the meantime. The message tells you when Synopsy will try again. Other tools that use the same property's quota, such as Looker Studio dashboards, can make this happen sooner.
A Reconnect banner appears
Google sometimes ends a sign-in, for example after you change your password or revoke access. Your cached cards stay visible. Click Reconnect to sign in to the same account and pick up where you left off.
There's a dot after the number in the menu bar
The dot means some information is stale or partial, for example because a property failed to refresh. Open the popover to see which card has a warning, and click its icon to read the details.
The numbers differ from the Google Analytics website
- Synopsy's Visitors is GA4's Total users. Many Google Analytics reports showActive users by default, which is usually a little lower.
- Synopsy's ranges include today and use each property's own reporting time zone.
- The combined total adds up each property's total. It doesn't remove people who visited more than one of your sites.
- Google's data for today and yesterday can still be processing, and can change for a while.
A site's colors or icon look wrong
Synopsy picks colors from each site's favicon. If a site has no favicon, or you'd like different colors, chooseChoose Colors… from the card's context menu, or edit the site in Settings → Websites. You can also correct the website address there.
Launch at login doesn't work
Move Synopsy to your Applications folder, then turn the option off and on again. macOS may also ask you to approve Synopsy in System Settings → General → Login Items.
Privacy and access
How do I revoke Synopsy's access?
In Synopsy, open Settings and click Disconnect. This deletes your sign-in tokens and cached reports from your Mac and revokes Synopsy's access with Google. You can also remove Synopsy at any time from your Google Account at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Is my data sent to Synopsy?
No. Synopsy has no server. Your analytics go directly from Google to your Mac and stay there. Read the fullPrivacy Policy.
Purchases
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles all Mac App Store purchases and refunds. Request one atreportaproblem.apple.com.
What are the requirements?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and a Google account with access to at least one Google Analytics 4 property.
